Christmas in Historic Chatham 2008
"Return to Competition"
1800- 1850

The Christmas season kicks off here in Historic Chatham!

Thursday, December 4th

        7:00 pm - Shadetree Rare Book Gallery – You are invited to attend the
Chatham First meeting and celebrate the historical town of "Competition"
which was on this spot from 1800-1850

Evening events will include:
·
Book Review of "The History and Development of Competition"
    written by Langhorne Jones, Sr. and reviewed by Langhorne Jones, Jr.
· "Why Competition" a dramatization of the arguments that led to the
    naming of the town of Competition by Gayle Carden Hudert
· Exhibit highlighting the town of Competition with artifacts, maps and photos
· Dulcimer concert
· Wine, punch, & light fare reception
The adult public is invited to attend.

Friday, December 5th

Friday night is the evening of our traditional Lantern Lighting Celebration, Christmas Caroling Festival, and Yule Log Celebration. Make sure to sample the plentiful and festive food, drinks and seasonal cheer! Chatham Main Street Businesses will be open with various specials. “Soundcheck,” a popular teen "open mic" coffee-house experience, will round out the evening.

                 Lighting of the Christmas trees 
                    Festival of Carols
                    Yule Log Celebration and recognition of Competition Alley
                    Santa and Mrs. Claus make an appearance

8:30 until 10pm  "Soundcheck" – musical “Open Mic” session
                        at the Chatham Community Center

Saturday, December 6th

Saturday’s events will thrill young and old. Vendors and crafters will set up their tents along Main Street and inside the Chatham Community Center starting at 9 AM. The return of last year’s extremely popular Chatham Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, will begin at 11 AM along Main Street. Of Course, Santa and Mrs. Claus will lead in the festivities. Following the parade, visitors will gather again at the Chatham Community Center at 1 PM for the third Christmas concert featuring Pittsylvania County’s own Kinney Rorrer with the New North Carolina Ramblers performing their “Old Time Music”. This concert, which is free and open to the public, is always a “standing room only” event.

          To close the weekend on Saturday at 4 PM, all are invited to the "Chatham Schola Cantorum" at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Dr. David Smith, Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, and Mr. Kevin Zakresky, Music Director at Chatham Hall, along with many others, will offer a special medieval Christmas Mass in Latin with Gregorian Chants.

                                Brunswick Stew Sale at the Chatham First tent in "Rotary Park"
                                Yard Sale by Animal Welfare League of Pitts. Co. in "Hampco" building
                                                                (building on corner of Main St. and Depot St.)
                                Oak Grove stocking stuffer donation box - Community Center

10 AM - Christmas Parade Line-up on northside of town

11 AM - Chatham Christmas Parade down Main Street

12:30 pm - Horse drawn carriage rides of Old Competition
                                Santa and Mrs. Santa at Community Center for pictures

1 pm - Kinney Rorrer "Old Time Music" at Chatham Community Center
   
                                 with the New North Carolina Ramblers

2:45 pm - "The Church Sisters" in concert at Chatham Community Center

4 pm - "Chatham Schola Cantorum" at Emmanuel Episcopal Church

***  Come visit us at the "Chatham First" tent, we'll be open all day! ***

And pick up your 2009 Calendar - "The Gardens of Chatham"
Proceeds will benefit town beautification projects!
