A Dickens Christmas in Chatham, VA

Visit Christmas “past” to celebrate Christmas “present” Dickens-style in Historic Chatham, Virginia. The two-day Christmas in Chatham celebration is set for Friday and Saturday, December 7th and 8th, 2007. The experience begins with the traditional Lantern Lighting processional on Friday at 7pm. Costumed residents lead the way as the evening’s festivities continue with the Yule Log Celebration and Festival of Carols, guaranteed to get you in the mood for a Dickens Christmas.

Be sure to return on Saturday for the Chatham Christmas Parade. The Chatham Volunteer Fire Department and Chatham First proudly sponsor this year’s parade, which features floats, antique vehicles, horses, Dickens characters, and a special appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus. Saturday’s program includes carriage tours of Whittle Street, escorted by costumed tour guides, as well as bus tours of local churches featured in the “The Churches of Chatham” 2008 calendar.  Historic re-enactors will introduce many interesting characters from our region throughout the day as visitors and townspeople stroll past vendors, crafters, auctions, and local businesses offering Christmas specials.

This year, Chatham First is delighted to commemorate 400 years of Virginia history by offering a special presentation coinciding with the Christmas celebration. The traveling Jamestown exhibits: “Uncovering Home: A Visual Essay in Jamestown Archaeology”, “Jamestown and Beyond: The World of 1607”, and “Looking for Jamestown Today: Photographs by Steven Coates” will be open to the public on Friday from 3pm until 6:30pm, and on Saturday from 9am to 5:30pm. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Office of Statewide Partnerships has developed this exhibition with the assistance of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Chatham is the only location in the state to host all three exhibits and is happy to open them to the public during the Christmas Festivities.

Christmas in Historic Chatham relies upon the talented musicians of the area to set the tone for the season. The music begins on Friday, December 7th, with the Christmas Caroling Festival and Yule Log Celebration. “Soundcheck”, a popular teenage coffee house experience, rounds out the festivities on Friday night. On Saturday at 11:am, the old-time music of “Kinney Rorrer and the New North Carolina Ramblers” will make everyone glad they came. At 4:00pm on Saturday, the combined Chatham choirs will perform as a glorious finale to a weekend of Christmas celebration, Dickens-style.
